Stones River Site Commemorates Epic Battle
Published Jul 22, 2008

One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War took place in Murfreesboro, and its place in history has been preserved.

The Battle of Stones River began on the last day of 1862 and produced important military gains for the Union. Today, Stones River National Battlefield hosts several special events throughout the year.

Events in 2008 included a Battle of the Bands in April that featured four area school bands playing Civil War songs and a Decoration Day in May that saw hundreds of Boy Scouts place flags on more than 7,000 grave sites in Stones River National Cemetery.

The battlefield also hosts several Hallowed Ground lantern tours of the cemetery that take place from June through August. To learn more, go to www.nps.gov/stri.
