Book Publisher Works at the Speed of Light
Published Jul 22, 2008

Established in 1997 with the advent of print-on-demand technology, La Vergne-based Lightning Source Inc. is a global leader in on-demand book manufacturing and distribution.

Lightning Source manufactures more than 1.2 million books every month for more than 5,000 publishers around the world, says J. Kirby Best, president and CEO. The Lightning Source digital library holds more than 500,000 titles.

While traditional publishers print thousands of books at a time, Lightning Source offers digital “one-off” book-production technology. The company maintains its inventory as electronic files, printing a specific book only when a customer places an order.

Best says that Lightning Source employs more than 700 associates globally. In addition to home base in La Vergne, the company operates in Allentown, Pa., and the United Kingdom.

Lightning Source, a subsidiary of Nashville-based Ingram Industries Inc., is located just down the road from sister company Ingram Book Group, the largest wholesale distributor of book products. “One key advantage to operating in La Vergne is the quality of the workforce,” Best says. “While speed is a cornerstone in the book industry, we also cherish quality. The area is a great resource for finding incredible associates.”
