Metal Fabricator Makes Quality Work in Rutherford
Published Jul 22, 2008

Quality Industries Inc. in La Vergne has earned high marks for its precision metal fabrication.

At a time when many manufacturers are facing cutbacks, Quality Industries Inc. continues to grow and thrive in Rutherford County.

Established in 1972, the award-winning La Vergne company has earned a solid reputation for excellence in precision metal fabrication.

The company produces a variety of items, from its own line of food-service equipment to custom fabrication and assemblies, says Jeff Mayfield, Quality president and CEO.

Quality Industries employs approximately 400 workers in about 250,000 square feet of manufacturing space that it has occupied since 1984 and expanded five additional times. The facility includes powder paint lines, lasers, robotic welding cells, stamping presses and integrated assembly and finishing cells.

The company serves a range of commercial and industrial markets, including heavy trucks and transportation, electrical enclosures, engineered aluminum structures and alternative-fuel heating equipment.

“We use some of the latest technology and equipment to meet our customers’ needs,” says Mayfield, who was with the company for more than 18 years before being named CEO in November 2007.

“We have the ability to combine hard-tool and soft-tool capabilities. We can provide components, subassembly or complete high-precision fabrication and assembly,” he says.

Mayfield is proud of the company’s ongoing efforts to utilize environmentally friendly methods.

“We have always been committed to environmental and safety issues. For example, we offer environmentally friendly paint processes – a lot of companies can’t say that,” he says.

When asked about Quality Industries’ ongoing success, Mayfield points to the company’s strategic location in Rutherford County as a key advantage.

In fact, the region is widely recognized as a leading distribution center, with ready access to major thoroughfares such as Interstates 24, 40, 65 and State Route 840.

“We deliver to customers across the country, so our central location is extremely important,” Mayfield says. With several major interstates crisscrossing it, the region is a transportation hub that provides quick and economical access to customers.
“There are a lot of logistics companies in the region, so our customers have a number of options when it comes to receiving product,” Mayfield says.

Beyond the community’s obvious geographic benefits, Mayfield also sees the Rutherford County business climate as an important asset and ally.

“Tennessee is very business friendly,” he says. “There is no individual state income tax, and that’s a big deal. There’s a lot of opportunity to grow your business here, and the state is willing to work with companies to bring them in. Rutherford County also has been very helpful to us over the years.”

This decidedly pro-business climate is sure to play into the company’s future growth, Mayfield says.

“We currently have about 250,000 square feet, but we’re looking at the possibility of leasing additional space in the area. But we certainly plan to be in Rutherford County – we have a long history here, and that’s important to us. It’s a wonderful area to live and work.”
